Sakurah Fisher: From Port Arthur, TX to Korea

As a student at Memorial High School in Port Arthur, TX, Sakurah chose a school close to home as Lamar University gave her the financial and scholarship opportunities she needed to receive her college education. She knew, however, that she wanted to broaden her view and knowledge of other cultures through LU’s Study Abroad program. So far, she has studied in Italy and South Korea and looks forward to doing research this summer in New York at a psychiatric institute as part of her David J. Beck Fellowship she was recently awarded.

Sakurah is a junior psychology major who first chose to travel with other LU students and her professor to Italy because she wanted to cross-culturally compare social aspects of the country to the United States through the course she completed while there. Sakurah FisherShe enjoyed the experience so much she decided to independently study the Korean language in South Korea, as she explains, “Because I wanted to immerse myself into an unfamiliar culture where I would be able to challenge myself as a scholar and individual.” Sakurah believes the best thing she received from these opportunities was meeting other students and individuals from various parts of the world, helping her to develop networking skills and build friendships.

Along with studying abroad, she enjoys being able to participate in undergraduate research, leadership positions and honors level courses, among other things, at Lamar University. She is actively engaged in activities such as the Ambassador program, Study Abroad Global Ambassador Program and the McNair Scholars Program as well as serving as immediate past president of the Rotaract Club and vice president of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. After graduation, she plans to attend graduate school and earn her doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
