Scott & Kayla Fisher

Restaurant and catering company owners Kayla and Scott Fisher met while they both attended Lamar University, graduating in 2008 and marrying the same year. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Science while Scott graduated with a degree in Applied Arts and Sciences. Neither planned on opening their own business but as they saw a need in the area, they felt they could be successful at it.

After starting a catering and event planning company seven years ago, they have expanded to three restaurant concepts and a catering business. Throughout this time, they also grew their family with four children and Kayla earned her Master’s in Business Administration from LU in 2015. Failure doesn’t seem to be in this busy couple’s vocabulary, but they realized failure isn’t always what you think it is. “As unexperienced entrepreneurs, everything seemed like a failure until we met very successful entrepreneurs who had faced similar situations and still succeeded,” Kayla says. “What we thought were failures became hiccups in the grand scheme of things – we learned from it and pressed on.”

The Fishers encourage budding entrepreneurs to not dismiss the importance of the financial aspect of their degree as well as make sure to be aware of the customer’s wants and needs. They believe the best businesses are built from knowing what a need is and then finding the solution. Scott and Kayla also feel a person’s hustle and heart will push future business owners past their biggest obstacles. Kayla explains further, stating, “At the end of the day, you have to be prepared to face your industry with professionalism and the ability to learn. LU prepared us with the knowledge and relationships to grow our business in Southeast Texas.”
